In the 1950’s my Dad joined the merchant Navy. He studied to become a radio officer and he worked at that for several years. During this time, he travelled all over the world and our bedtime stories as kids were tales of his amazing travels and crazy adventures. Over the years we came to learn that he couldn’t swim so this probably wasn’t the best career choice for him. The MN Radio Officers primary role was the responsibility of “Safety of life at Sea”. He had to receive and transmit communications by CW (Morse code). When the ship sailed the radio officer was on watch in the radio room. He would listen out in case a distress SOS or urgency signal was being sent. Fortunately for all that never happened as he later admitted that he had absolutely no understanding whatsoever of the Morse code.
